Welcome to A Living Giant, a multimedia engagement with the kauri tree, a subtropical pine species and taonga (treasure) of its Māori guardians. The kauri’s ancient roots plant a connection to a mythological past, and its vast ecosystem of plant and animal life anchor that living connection between community and land in the present. This project follows the community – Māori iwi, kaitiaki organizations, individual knowledge holders, and governmental institutions – and the land they care for – the remaining kauri forests of Aotearoa New Zealand – to ensure the prosperity of this cherished tree in the future.
